HIGHLANDS TEAMS OUTPLAYED BY SOUTH COAST
The three HDCA teams found the South Coast teams a formidable opposition in round 1 of the Southern Zone Junior Inter District Competition.
After encouraging pre-season hit outs against Goulburn and South Coast they struggled to take advantage of any opportunities available to them.
Playing away at Gerry Emery Oval in the Under 14 team competition, the hosts made sound use of the wicket and from their 50 over allocation amassed 237 runs for the loss of five wickets.
A solid opening partnership of 93 runs set the foundation for a sizable total.
Their first 94 runs was accumulated in 25 overs with the batsmen playing aggressively during the second half of their innings.
Whilst the visitors tied up the opposition in short spells they were unable to restrict the run charge.
Opening pair Will Preddy, 1/43 from 9 overs and Thomas Simpson, 1/26 in his spell of 5 overs, were able to restrict the scoring rate to 30 runs after 10 overs.
However the batsmen attacked the remaining bowlers in their determination to record a solid total.
First change bowlers Will Watson and Hayden Willebrand both recorded identical figures of 0/26 from 8 overs each when brought into the attack restricting the batting to three runs an over.
Oscar Murton returned the figures of 2/56 off 10 overs whilst Saxon Hilkemeijer persisted despite a fractured finger with a return of 0/42 from 36 balls.
Finn Kaufline, registering 1/12 from four overs was the other wicket taker as the ball sped across a lightning fast outfield.
HDCA openers Murton and Hilkemeijer added 50 runs in their opening stand in 19 overs before Murton returned to the pavilion with 37 runs to his name.
Numbers three and four were dismissed in quick succession.
Willebrand, in endeavouring to pierce the close in fielders, registered 11 runs.
Of the remaining batsmen Hilkemeijer handled the opposition bowlers best scoring 37 runs, being dismissed in the fortieth over while receiving solid support from Jack McCallum who was run out for 31 runs.
Preddy registered double figures with the side dismissed for 152 runs.
The team have drawn Bradman Oval next Sunday against Far South Coast/Monaro.
The Under 16 team also made the trip down the mountain where they met their South Coast counterparts at Geoff Shaw Oval.
In front of a solid band of supporters captain James Morton elected to field after a correct call.
By drinks the visitors were finding it difficult to dislodge the opposition batsmen with Zac de Hosson taking 1/20 from his nine overs.
The pick of the bowlers was Mason King finishing with 3/25 from 9 overs in dismissing the tail end batsmen.
Dominic Haire and King were responsible for a run out each.
Toby Smith sent down seven overs of useful leg spin finishing with 1/29. Ben Tucker, Connor Taylor-Helme 2/17 and Sam Lawrence tried to contain the batting side.
South Coast finished with 169 runs.
Light rain fell upon assumption of play however the home side’s attack maintained a steady line and length to restrict the Highlands scoring.
With the tail end batsmen offered some resistance, the team was dismissed for 69 runs after 41.2 overs.
Two batsmen managed double figures, King 11 runs and Lawrence with 10 runs with extras contributing 15 to the total.
The team awaits the arrival of Australian Under 17 player Dominic O’Shannessy to bolster their resources.

ROUND 2
IMPROVED PERFORMANCES AGAINST FAR SOUTH COAST IN JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET
After disappointing results in round one of the Southern Zone Junior Representative Cricket games all HDCA teams regrouped and demonstrated greater commitment in their matches against Far South Coast.
A number of individual performances, during the three games, lifted each teams’ spirits ensuring solid performances.
The under 16 team travelled to the south east corner of the state to see their captain James Morton win the toss informing the opposition that the visitors would have first use of the wicket with the bat.
On a sparkling spring morning opener Connor Taylor-Helme demonstrated a mixture of defence and run scoring against a swinging new ball attack compiling a patient 25 runs as drinks were taken.
Unfortunately his team mates were unable to demonstrate the same application and at six down for sixty nine runs the situation was deteriorating quickly.
With the arrival of Darcy Murchie and Dominic Haire to the crease the pair added fifty seven runs for the seventh wicket partnership contributing forty one runs and thirty six runs respectively.
With assistance from tail enders Zac de Hosson and Mason King the total finished with 170 runs on the board with the last four batsmen adding 100 runs.
Following the luncheon adjournment the new ball partnership of de Hosson and King ripped the heart out of the Far South Coast batting with the hosts tumbled to three wickets for four runs after four overs.
An excellent first slip catch by Sam Lawrance further lifted the team morale and soon King had the encouraging figures of three wickets for seven runs from his five overs.
As a result of enterprising partnerships by the next three batsmen, Far South Coast recovered to six wickets for one hundred and nine runs from thirty four overs.

Within six overs the hosts collapsed from three wickets for one hundred runs to seven for one hundred and seventeen with the loss of Thomas Olafsen, Jessica Savage and James Smith in quick succession.

With the opposition requiring fifty two runs for victory, Hol achieved the breakthrough with Ayling taking a smart keeper’s catch for thirteen runs followed by the dismissal of the persistent Far South Coast opener for forty three runs as a result of a fine catch above his head by Harwood on the boundary.
This spurred the team onto greater achievement with the next six overs cutting through the opposition’s middle to lower order batsmen.
Lambie finished with three wickets for seven runs off twelve balls, two of the wickets taken in successive balls.
The clean- up responsibilities fell on the shoulders of Kowalski taking one wicket for four runs from six overs and James Smith two wickets for twenty four runs from six overs, the last three batsmen falling within three overs.
The team was grateful for the scoring undertaken throughout the day by Danny and Kim Hol as well as the support, in various ways, from extended families.
The team now head to the Southern Tablelands next Sunday for their game against the Monaro District.
Both under 14 teams were drawn to play their match at picturesque Bradman Oval under sunny conditions with the result unknown until the second last over of the day’s proceedings.
The venue motivated all players to lift and perform as best they could at this historic ground.
Far South Coast/Monaro took to the batting crease and finished with one hundred and thirty six runs.
Will Preddey, who finished with three wickets for twenty seven runs from eight overs used the new ball demonstrating some genuine pace and sent three top order opposition batsmen back to the pavilion.
Willoughby Watson bowled very economically suffocating the batsmen with only six runs scored off his eight overs that included a wicket.
Hayden Willebrand returned figures of one wicket for one run from sixteen deliveries before being forced to retire from the bowling crease with a foot injury.

Thanks were extended to Byron and Geoff for their commitment to ensuring the score book accurately reflected the day’s play whilst HDCA umpire Angus Humphries fulfilled his duties at both ends.
The team now moves into the third round next Sunday with a home game against Goulburn/Crookwell.
ROUND 3
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS BY de HOSSON AND O’SHANNESSEY IN JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE
CRICKET
The Under 16 team journeyed down to Nowra for two T20 games. Drawn against Goulburn in game one, HDCA padded up for their innings with Ryan Emmerick and Dominic O’Shannessy facing the opening attack.
Emmerick was the first to lose his wicket with the score at thirty seven, contributing twenty one runs to the total.
Nobody could have anticipated what was to transpire as number three Ben Tucker and O’Shannessy took to the opposition bowling.
Their second wicket partnership flourished with the score moving from thirty seven to two hundred and thirty three runs.
The innings closed at one down for two hundred and seventy runs. Tucker played a supportive knock scoring thirty seven runs endeavouring to provide his partner the lion’s share of the strike.
O’Shannessy found no demons in any of the balls bowled by the opposition.
His determination and excellent shot selection entertained the on lookers as he applied his trade to finish with two hundred and eleven runs not out.
His twenty one fours and seventeen sixes must have brought back memories of those who are aware of Bradman’s innings at Blackheath on Monday 2 November 1931 when the Boy from Bowral made two hundred and fifty six runs from fourteen sixes and twenty nine fours.
Into the field strode the HDCA players still rejoicing after O’Shannessy’s outstanding knock.
With clouds shielding the sun, Zac de Hosson completely dismantled any slight hope the opposition may have had of challenging the HDCA score.
After three overs his figures were five wickets, including a hat trick, for no runs.
By the time he was required to hand over the ball the left arm fast bowler’s impressive figures read eight wickets for six runs. Of major significance was the manner in which de Hosson claimed his wickets – all clean bowled.
Sam Lawrance finished with one wicket.
In the second game HDCA’s O’Shannessy and Emmerick again opened the innings.
There would be no repeat of what occurred only hours before as both batsmen were required to deal with quality spin bowling supported by accurate field placings.
The score reached six wickets down for one hundred and twenty one runs after their twenty over quota.
Tucker was the chief run scorer completing a solid day with the bat being forty three runs not out.
Support was supplied by O’Shannessy twenty four runs, Emmerick seventeen runs and Lawrance fourteen runs not out.
ACT didn’t have it their own way with de Hosson and Mason King claiming early wickets.
The incoming batsmen set about consolidating their team’s innings and with ten overs bowled, HDCA‘s opposition required seven runs an over.
A fifty five run partnership allowed ACT to forge closer to their required target that was reached to defeat the Highlands combination.
De Hosson’s two wickets for thirteen runs saw him finish with ten wickets for the day, an extremely encouraging team contribution.
The other wicket takers all captured one wicket each.
King had twenty nine runs taken from his bowling, Toby Smith twenty runs and Conor Taylor Helme seventeen runs.
Thanks are extended to Simon Lawrance and Jason Smith for taking charge of the score book.
The team will go into their game next Sunday at Bradman Oval determined to wrap up a semi-final position.
The HDCA under 12 team ensured their journey to Cooma was worthwhile with a close win in their game against hosts Monaro.
With the majority of the players, team management and extended family members harbouring in Cooma overnight, the match was always going to be a close encounter.
Without regular players Will Kowalski and Archie McLean, Duke Garaske was drafted into the team and performed well.
Captain James Smith called correctly at the toss and nominated the visitors to bat.
Opening pair Hugh Hansen and Jake Ayling faced the new ball bowlers establishing a thirty run stand.
Ayling scored twenty one runs not being able to take full advantage of the chances offered by Monaro.
Both Hansen and number three Sam Harwood managed five runs each before Jesse Hol played a sheet anchor role holding the innings together before being dismissed for twenty runs.
The side were limited to ten runs in ten overs nearing the conclusion of their forty over quota.
Hilary Swan and Garske added seven runs off the final twelve balls that saw HDCA finish nine wickets down for ninety five runs.
The boundaries were set well back whilst the outfield was slow.
Attempting to achieve victory with just over a two run per rate, Monaro took the field after the break to chase down the required total.
With ten overs bowled, the hosts had lost four wickets for forty four runs with the match still evenly poised.
Ten overs later an additional wicket was lost with the score edged along to sixty two.
At this stage Smith had captured two wickets with Darcy McNamara, Oscar Lambie and Garske one each.
Harwood lead the way again this week with two head high catches whilst positioned at fine leg.
Reminiscent of the previous week, the fielding team needed to really focus on the task at hand to dismiss the last five batsmen whilst endeavouring to limit the run rate.
This was achieved as a result of an encouraging team effort.
McNamara’s eight overs of leg spin resulted in two wickets for eight runs, including three maidens.
Smith’s fortunes as captain excelled, returning to the crease to complete a second four over spell finishing with three wickets for twelve runs.
Garskie demonstrated his value to the team taking one wicket for eleven runs from forty two balls.
Jesse Hol returned with economical figures of one wicket for two runs as Monaro slowly capitulated being eight wickets down for seventy four runs from thirty three overs.
Smith displayed sound cricketing nous swinging Hansen into the attack and in his first time at the crease for the season cleaned bowled the remaining opposition batsmen, claiming two wickets for six runs from his fifteen balls leaving Monaro short of the required total.
Tight bowling and a concerted team effort reflected the team’s performance.
The players appreciated the efforts of Michael McNamara and Danny Hol in taking charge of the scorebook and to the families who transported the team to and from the Southern Tablelands.
Next week’s game against Shoalhaven should only be less than a two hour drive at Sanctuary Point Oval.
The Under 14 team played Goulburn/Crookwell at Lackey Park in their T20 game.
Batting first the home team lost five wickets for ninety five runs from their twenty overs.
Willoughby Watson top scored with thirty runs with the main support supplied by Jack Baldwin twenty one runs and Sam Hilkemeijer twelve runs not out.
Extras proved helpful contributing sixteen to the total.
In reply the opposition past the required total scoring ninety eight runs for the loss of three wickets.
For HDCA three bowlers captured a wicket each. Will Preddey saw eight runs taken from his bowling,
Oscar Murton four runs and Hayden Willebrand nine runs. Unfortunately the local bowlers contributed twenty six runs to the Goulburn/Crookwell score via extras.
Another home game at Lackey Park awaits the team next Sunday against the Northern Cavaliers.
