The Leukaemia Foundation’s annual ‘Light the Night’ event attracted more than 80 people to Bradman Park on Friday evening, October 6.
Those who took part each bought a coloured lantern to carry as darkness fell, with all funds raised going toward the foundation.
Gold lanterns were used to remember loved ones lost to blood cancer, those who carried a white lantern have been diagnosed with blood cancer themselves, and blue lanterns showed the community’s support of all those affected by blood cancers.
The two top local fundraisers were present on the night – Paul Bailey, who managed to raise $2250 for the foundation and Alex Neilsen, who raised $1500.
Mr Bailey, who brought along a selection of Highland Cruiser Hot Rod cars for the evening, said this year’s event was a tremendous show of support from the community.
“The amount of lanterns that were bought to do the walk meant that we have been able to raise more money [for the charity] tonight. I think it will just keep getting better,” he said.
Now in its 10th year, the event is held in more than 140 locations in Australia.
The Bradman Oval was an especially poignant venue for the fundraiser, as Lady Jesse Bradman was diagnosed with a blood cancer, and passed away from Leukemia 20 years ago in September 1997.
