Former Chevalier College student Jacob Debono recently won a year long placement with INFINITI Engineering Academy.
Jacob beat out more than 5000 other applicants in the Asia-Oceania to become one of 10 finalists that travelled to Hong Kong for an intense competition at INFINITI’s global headquarters.
While in Hong Kong, Jacob battled it out against other finalists in an intense round of engineering play-offs.
The play-offs occurred over several days and Jacob was ultimately chosen as the winner.
He is the second Australian to ever have won the prized placement.
Jacob will spend six months working with the Formula OneTM team and six months working at INFINITI’s European Technical Center.
The announcement of Jacob’s success was made by Renault Sport F1 driver Nico Hülkenberg in a livestream.
During the livestream, Jacob said the win was overwhelming.
“There are nine other people who could just as easily be standing in this spot, so I’m incredibly grateful to be standing where I am right now,” he said.
“You’re all exceptional people and exceptional engineers, and I look forward to bumping courses with you in the future.”
Jacob said he was shocked to have won against some very tough competition.
When asked what he thought made him the best candidate for the winning spot, Debono was still just as humble.
“I was standing there thinking which one of the guys next to me was going to get this. I thought maybe I had a three per cent chance, so it’s all very overwhelming.”
Jacob is a current student at the Australian National University (ANU) completing his degree in science and engineering.
