Dr Eric Savage will be speaker at the society’s meeting on May 25.
He will reflect on his personal experiences with trying to protect heritage places, drawing on lessons from working with the NSW National Trust, Harper's Mansion in Berrima, Wingecarribee Council and most recently with the Sutton Forest cultural landscape area (heritage study) and the threat of mining proposals by Korea's Hume Coal.
Dr Savage grew up in Sydney and studied geology at the University of NSW. After graduating with a PhD in 1976 he joined the public service in Canberra, working mostly in international commodity trade policy. This involved stints with the Uranium Export Office, the Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Departments of Trade and Resources, Foreign Affairs and Trade. He served a period overseas at the Washington DC Embassy and later in Paris with the International Energy Agency, a part of the OECD, for six years.
He moved to Berrima in 2002 and first became involved with heritage through joining the local branch of the National Trust. In 2008 he was awarded a NSW Government Volunteer Heritage Award. Currently Dr Savage is Chairman of the Harper's Management Committee and Berrima Residents Association president. He is steering efforts to list Berrima as an item on the NSW State Heritage Register.
The meeting starts at 2 pm, upstairs at the Historical Society’s Research Centre, Old Council Chambers building, Bowral Road, Mittagong. Details: 4872 2169.
