Mittagong Public School students are raising money to purchase solar kits, and they need the community’s support.
Year 4 student Allegra said she hoped their project would make a difference.
“We’re trying to help kids overseas who don’t have access to electricity,” she said.
“It’s so they can see their homework and make a big change to their education.”
The students hope to raise $1550 to purchase 62 kits from charity Solarbuddies, which they will assemble at school.
Many disadvantaged children have to complete their homework by a fire or burn kerosene.
Year 5 student Maisie said she was excited to be part of a global effort to help other children.
“It could change a child’s life a lot,” she said.
The students will also learn about energy poverty, environmental issues and make connections with the children who receive the solar kits as part of the project.
The first fundraising event for the project is a cake stall to be held at the school on May 17.
A secondhand children’s book stall will be held later in the year, and everyone is encourage to donate items or come along to give support.
Those wishing to make a donation can call the school on 4871 1020.
