Marisol Santos is the founder and instructor of Flamenco Solymar, where the community can learn the flamenco.
She grew up learning ballet and flamenco at the GGY School of Dance in Fairfield, but never thought flamenco would end up being the dance she would teach.
“I thought ballet was my life, but when I went to university to study my Bachelor of Dance, they offered a contemporary class,” Marisol said.
“I feel in love with contemporary, and realised flamenco was just as grounded and strong, so I become more passionate about it.”
Flamenco is recognised by UNESCO as an ‘intangible cultural heritage of humanity’, and is described as a dance of passion and courtship.
Marisol described flamenco as a strong, emotional dance.
“I try to encourage my students to find a strong emotion within. Children are especially good at dancing with feeling.
“Dancers should show a little pride and confidence, and not be afraid to show-off a little.”
Marisol acknowledges learning a new dance can be daunting, and so offers private lessons for those wishing to learn some basics before entering a group class.
She said the dances covered a wide range of emotions.
“There are the dances that are fun and festive, then some very solemn singing and deep emotion, showing the hardships of being a gypsy.”
She also teaches Spanish and the cajón, a box-shaped drum originally from Peru.
“The language classes began because someone found out I speak Spanish and wanted to learn.
“Anyone can come, from beginners to those who have already learned Spanish and want to keep it up.”
Marisol encouraged everyone to come and try something new at her studio.
“Music, dance and learning a language have been shown to help improve brain functionality, so come along to keep your body and mind moving.”
Classes are held Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Term fees vary depending on the class length and type. Call 0419 194 473 or email solymar12@hotmail.com for more information. You can also find Flamenco Solymar on Facebook.
