Rotherwood Wines won a gold medal and the trophy for Best Young Pinot Noir for its 2015 pinot noir at the 2016 NSW Wine Awards.
Up against more than 50 other wines from across the state, Rotherwood sales manager David Young said the win came as a bit of a shock.
“You could hear people saying where is Rotherwood?”
“We are all delighted that the vineyard has now justified the investment that’s been put in.”
They also picked up at bronze for the 2015 pinot grigio and for the rose.
Jonathon Holgate of Tertini has been making Rotherwood’s wines for the past few years.
Rotherwood took its first harvest in 2010 which was just Shiraz and sauvignon blanc and despite a few setbacks, the range has grown over the past few years.
“The 2013 Pinot was great and the 2015 and 2016 for what we’ve done so far has been good,” Mr Young said.
“In my view if you have good grapes and you choose good root stock it’s really all in the grounds and environment that it’s in.”
Mr Young said the vines were planted in 2007.
There is 1.2 hectares of pinot grigio, 2.2 hectares of pinot noir and 2.1 hectares of of sauvignon blanc.
“We’re happy to get four tonne a hectare. It would be easy to get more but the vine can only support so many bunches so we tend to scale it down a bit.
“We’re all about getting the quality not the quantity.”
Rotherwood’s range currently includes Saviougnon Blanc, Pinot grigio and four clones of Pinot Noir.
They also make a Rose which Mr Young was slightly different.
“Ours is a mix between the Pinot noir and the Pinot grigio. So it’s about 25 per cent Pinot noir and 75 per cent Pinot grigio.”
Now that people are starting to talk about Rotherwood, Mr Young said they had plans to expand.
“What we’re looking at is putting in some Shiraz [and we] would also like to do some chardonnay.”
Future plans also include tasting rooms at the property in Sutton Forest. Rotherwood currently has an online cellar door. Visit www.rotherwood.com.au for their full range of wines.
