The Boy from Oz tells of the life of singer/songwriter Peter Allen and features songs written by him.
Musical director Kate Price said the musical was chosen because of the impressive number of talented singers at the school.
"We knew we had the singers for it so it was the perfect choice. It's a piece of iconic Australian history, Peter had an up and down life and we wanted to show that," she said.
"A lot of the songs in the musical people don't necessarily realise were written by Peter Allen."
Between the catchy show tunes and the creative movement of the choreography, the show is sure to impress.
"We have great musicians for this show, it is a particularly hard score and they've worked very hard. It really is a whole performing arts musical, we've involved the whole department," she said.
The musical also offered opportunities to students outside of the performing arts department, with Year 7 students involved in the chorus.
"They learn the songs in their music classes and then get the chance to see what it's like being part of a production like this. It also offers a chance for senior students to play a mentoring role for the younger kids coming through," Ms Price said.
Students have spent much of the school year preparing for the musical, working through lunch breaks and attending after-school and weekend rehearsals. Year 12 student Jacob Sgouros has also been working hard to rehearse the lead role of Peter Allen.
"Jacob's a great singer, he's exactly right for the role," Ms Price said. Jacob is a musician and actor and finds musical theatre to be an ideal combination of his two passions.
"It's what I love doing, I just love performing in front of people," he said.
No stranger to musicals, Jacob has held lead roles in previous Chevalier College musicals including Disco Inferno and Jesus Christ Superstar.
