All the hard work he and his team put into the 2020 campaign may have gone to the way side, but he's not sitting around waiting for something to happen.

Instead this Highlands racer is facing off with some of the world's best racing drivers in online simulation races.

Lachlan Mineeff was all set for his 2020 Australian Formula Ford Championship season, when like most other sports in the world, has been delayed due to COVID-19 crisis.

But, the pressure is still on him.

Even from his bedroom he's facing off with top-tier racing talent. But Mineeff still can't wait to get back on the real tarmac.

"It's quite upsetting that the 2020 season is cancelled," Mineeff said.

"The team and I had all these plans in place and for it to be taken away is pretty gut-wrenching.

"These are uncertain times at the moment though. Obviously health and everyone else's well-being is priority right now, but for it all to be taken away is pretty crazy to think about."

Instead of moping around and waiting for next season's action, Mineeff took to the net and put his skills up against the best he could to keep his racing skills sharp and little did he know he'd be going up against some of the world's best drivers.

"I've been using a lot of online racing simulators," Mineeff said.

"I've used it as a form of training and learning tool for my racing for the past two years now.

"All real world motor sport has been cancelled, so using this tool for competition is very cool.

"All across the world, sim-racing has improved drastically just within the last month. Real drivers across the world are competing online.

"I hosted a Bathurst six hour session on the weekend and hoped people would join.

"We ended up racing Max Verstappen from Redbull Racing in Formula One, which was really cool.

"NASCAR, Formula One, they've all put on their own racing series online with all the real world drivers competing. It's really great for the sport to be continuing under these circumstances."

From having your 2020 campaign crushed to battling wheel-to-wheel with an upcoming Formula One superstar is quite the mood shift.

"I definitely took my chances trying to overtake Max," Mineeff said. "

"It's very competitive and there are different classes. I was in a lower class car to Max, but we had a lot of strategy involved. We were competing against three drivers in the one car.

"When you're not driving, you're the team strategist, or protecting the fuel and tyres. We managed our car really well and were battling for the lead in the final two hours.

"We gave it a really good crack, but we came off second in our class which was really cool."

The simulators aren't your regular gaming console. There's nothing like the real thing, but these programs are the next best thing.

"The program's software is very, very good," Mineeff said.

"It's a very complex program and has been developed over many years. The software mixed with the hardware create great feedback with the foot pedals.

"Sure it's not the real thing, but you can definitely get a feel for the car through the wheel and braking.

"It's crazy, you're sitting there in your room and you're playing against guys like Max Verstappen or Lando Norris wheel-to-wheel and that's really cool."

As much as Mineeff loves competing online against the best, he can't wait to get back into the real thing.

"At this stage everything is cancelled," Mineeff said.

"However, it does look like we could be back racing around November this year. With everything planned for then, we should be back on track by then."
