If ever asked to nominate the best I have seen my choice is easier than a politician telling a fib.
Jack Nicklaus. Best performed. Best behaved on and off the fairways. Upheld the decency of golf more than any.
In a moment of self-indulgence I have listed my best and my favourites.
Rugby League: Best- Johnny Raper. Favourite- Tony Paskins (Randwick Rugby, Workington Town (UK), Eastern Suburbs, Oberon, Manly.)
Cricket: Best- Keith Miller. Favourite- Keith Miller. My one and only idol.
Golf: Best- Jack Nicklaus. Favourite- Jan Stephenson. Sparked even when the sunset.
Swimming: Best- Dawn Fraser. Favourite- John Konrads So smooth.
Boxing: Best- Jimmy Carruthers. Favourite- Sugar Ray Robinson.
Tennis: Best- Pete Sampras. Favourite- Lew Hoad. Colorful.
AFL: Best- Tony Lockett. Favourite- Buddy Franklin. Never a dull moment.
Rugby: Best- Ken Catchpole. Favourite- Matt Burke. All style and class.
Soccer: Best- Leo Baumgartner. Favourite- Karl Jaros. Panache personified.
Athletics: Best- Carl Lewis. Favourite- Betty Cuthbert. Miss Nice Girl.
Motor Sport: Best- Mark Skaife. Favourite- Jim Richards. Lived to drive-safely.
Jockeys: Best-Roy Higgins. Favourite- Tye Angland. On speaking terms with all his mounts.
Sports Commentators: Best- Bert Bryan. Favourite- Dennis Commetti. So, so witty. As professional as they come.
Administrators: Best - Dr Henry Seamonds (soccer.) Favourite-John Quayle. :Loved a drink.
Writers: Best- Ian Wooldridge (Daily Mail, UK.) Favourite - Mike Gibson. Wrote what he wanted to read.
World's Best all sports: a tie - Jack Nicklaus and Wayne Gretsky.
