Toasting to its fifteenth year in Australia and fifth year in the Highlands, the runners of Park Run Bowral celebrated the only way they know how, an invigorating run on a Saturday morning.
Bowral Park Run organiser Barry Smith brought it to the Highlands after a trip interstate.
"Park Run hit Australia in 2011," Smith said.
"It started to slowly grow in Melbourne and surrounding places. I stumbled across it in Victoria and at that time we had a little group of runners on a Saturday morning, so we used something that was established and it worked really well in Bowral.
"I contacted Park Run Australia and we got it set up. It's been running for five years in the Southern Highlands now."
You don't need to be a world class athlete or runner to partake in Park Run. It's an inclusive and friendly environment for people to get fit.
"We've had many runners who started off slow and now are topping the time sheets," Smith said.
"Many start out just walking. Then they begin to walk faster and eventually they begin to run. We've got countless runners with us who started out as walkers.
"It's great to see when a whole family comes along for a regular Saturday morning. You'll see mum and dad with the kids starting out, then the kids get faster and get independent with their running.
"Norma Wallet our 90 year old runner is actually faster than she was when she began Park Run. I went over her record sheet, she was there at the first event and her times are quicker now than when she first started."
Besides the health benefits, Park Run is also an excellent place to meet new people and create friendships.
"I just love the running community," Smith said.
"It's great to be a part of such a great community of people. The beautiful thing about Park Run is that everyone is invited.
"We get people from all sorts of backgrounds. Millionaires, heads of companies and homeless people.
"We all see each other for an hour each Saturday morning and people who usually wouldn't communicate with one another, we're all brought together by the same passion."
For now there is only one leg of Park Run in the Highlands, but the way it's expanding, there maybe new routes available in the future.
"From day one we haven't advertised Park Run here in Bowral," Smith said.
"It has grown from word of mouth. It has exploded in rural and country areas and gets quite busy. New legs of Park Run are constantly being opened.
"We'd love to get to a point where we have too many people for one area and have to open a new one in Mittagong or Moss Vale.
"But at the moment we're comfortable having between 100 and 120 people show up each Saturday morning. The beauty of it is we get new people all the time. We have 2000 people registered online for Park Run in Bowral.
"We could have all 2000 show up any given weekend. The more people that realise it's such a great way to get fit it will continue to grow.
"Park Run changes your life, it really does."
