A standard away match day of fixtures plus our single fundraising event for the year in the evening. President Damien Plain was at the Robertson Bowling Club by 7am to commence the set-up!
The juniors were ferried around to their matches in the north end of town from David Wood in Bowral through to Yerrinbool and Hill. What a contrast in weather when compared to the previous week - it actually became a little too warm for the players' liking.
Our U12s met Bowral Opals and went down 3 - 0.
The U13s match was a top of the table clash with Yerrinbool. It was a tough match with both teams having strong moments in attack with well worked passing plays. Ultimately Yerrinbool took a well-deserved win 5-3. Unfortunately one of Yerrinbool's strongest players was injured mid-way during the match and had to leave the game, which never sits well with either team. We wish him well in his hopefully speedy recovery.
The U15s team met Exeter and suffered an 8-2 defeat but managed some highlights with a goal from Neve Wallace and a cracker from Dan Wyllie off a free kick that never looked like missing.
The Youth Grade side took on Moss Vale at Joe smith and had a cracker of a start with an early goal from Clarry Christopherson. But they peaked too early and were overcome 3 -1.
They were followed by the men's Gold team who fought hard against Yerrinbool Green, being one all at half time. The second half saw some play and Yerrinbool took the result 4-3. Our 'imports' took the glory with a goal to Rudney Chimichek and two to Jefferson Valencia.
The Maroon men took over and were happy to gain a 3-1 win over Yerrinbool Black, which sees them cemented at the top of the table for the season and taking out the Minor Premiers title. Go team! Mason King, Clay Caines and Josh Zemljacenko contributed to the score board with their keen team putting in the work.
The ladies Maroon team met Moss Vale White in another top of the table clash. The team was lacking a number of key players and had to call on some of the Gold ladies, who had the day off, to field a team. It was a tough ask on what became a hot Saturday afternoon and Moss Vale White prevailed comfortably 4 - 0. Natasha Wann and Jemma Coulter were stand outs with huge work rates.
Thence the race commenced to set up for Race Night before those attending arrived. It's a giant undertaking when you consider those running it are also involved in a day of soccer matches when they need a day of preparation. But Damo and Peggy's Bistro got it sorted with a helping hand from Ally Haining, who could not attend the night but did his bit with some muscle work. The Bowlo looked SCHMICK! And Damo managed to duck home for a quick change into his suit before the first guests arrived to catch him in his trackies.
The transformation in some of the guests was something to behold. From sweaty soccer gear to race ready fancy pants - what a sight!
As usual having fun was the name of the game, and I think I'm safe to say everyone had a ball. The pace was hectic but the food and drink was great and kept the crowd of nearly 120 going until almost midnight.
Our club choose a charity to support each year with the proceeds of a raffle and our charity race - Race 4 sponsored by and known as the Bounce Back 2 Health 'Charity Cup'. Belinda Macgraw of Bounce Back 2 Health sponsored the charity race for the eighth year in a row! What an effort.
This year our chosen charity was the McGrath Foundation who need no introduction. Their efforts in providing breast care nurses to those going through a breast cancer journey are truly impressive.
The charity choice was a no-brainer this time around with one of our own having had her own breast cancer journey just this year. Mel Plain is by no means finished her journey but is an absolute inspiration to those of us not facing nearly as much.
The McGrath Foundation was unable to attend the night but Mel stepped up to give a difficult and emotional speech about her journey to highlight the need and worth of the breast cancer nurses the McGrath Foundation fund.
We're proud to say our efforts raised over $1,650 for the McGrath Foundation which will be put to good use supporting their quest to ensure all breast cancer patients are supported.
Race Night provides fast paced entertainment along with the opportunity to raise funds to support our club in our efforts to keep our fees low, and in particular our junior fees. It allows the provision each year of a bonus item to each of our junior players which is great for the club spirit, not to mention the parents' hip pocket. Over the years we have provided tracksuit pants, hoodies, long sleeved undershirts and polo shirts free to each of our junior players, along with a free pair of playing socks, which would not have been possible without the fundraising efforts of the committee.
The nights events included the rather cheeky 'Stand Up Sit Down' warm up that presenter Curt is renowned for, along with a couple of rounds of Heads or Tails in between races, plus lucky door prizes and of course Fashions on the Field - for the ladies and the gentlemen.
The races were entertaining, featuring horses, pigs and afghan hounds, some with very clever names and others that were a little bit naughty. The cheering was passionate and the winners were grinning, but so were those not in the winning circle which is just how we like it.
Of course a successful night like this depends on the support of our sponsors and we had oh so many. Our major sponsor this year was First Choice Earthworks and how lucky we are! They not only took on the major sponsorship role they also doubled our $500 draw so that two lucky people won $500 each! If you're looking for earthworks FCE are the crew for you.
The Rovers Cup topped off the night with some enthusiastic bidding for the right to own the four horses not already owned by our sponsors.
It's the finale of the night and the major trophy along with the Fashions on the Field winners are decided by it. Fittingly, Mel Plain's horse 'Warrior' crossed the line first giving her the 2019 title on the night dedicated to a charity that supported her in a very personal journey. It couldn't have been planned any better and clearly the universe was at play for all the pieces to fall into place.
And so it turned to the pack up. Again another big job but a satisfying one knowing the event was successful and worth the efforts made. And with just a little bit of talk about 'next year'.
Go Robbo!
