The Highland Howard brothers, Darcy and Jack have been selected to the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) Team for the Australian Schoolboys Rugby League.
With Darcy on wing and Jack playing lock, they've grown up continually trying to get the best out of one another.
"The backyard games growing up were always pretty competitive," Darcy said.
"There was never a time that I wanted to lose to him and visa versa (laughs). We had a fair bit of rivalry."
"I like to try and keep him from beating me," Jack said.
"I thought he got me, but then I got the call up for the team and I'm pretty stoked about that."
Both the Howard brothers have been called up to play for the CIS Team but it nearly didn't happen at all. A team injury opened up a spot on the roster and the Howard duo continues on.
"When I was selected, I was shocked," Jack said.
"I couldn't wait to get started but I was disappointed for Jack not to be selected because we've done this together, but to find out he's now a late selection, I'm so happy for him."
"I'm heading in there to do my best," Jack said.
"I don't have a point to prove. They've picked me off my abilities and they liked what they saw. That's good enough for me and I'm going to give it everything I have and play to the best of my abilities.
"Now I've got this second chance, I'm going to run with it as far as I can."
It was a long road for the Howard brothers to make the CIS team selection. From the backyard to rubbing shoulders with NRL players, the hard work they've put into their craft is now starting to pay off.
"We've been in rugby since we were playing for the under 6s for the Bowral Kookaburras," Darcy said.
"We've been playing ever since and in the last two years we've actually been playing rugby union for our school Chevalier College. We hadn't been playing too much league, but we went down and tried out for the CIS team and we were lucky enough to be picked in the 30 man camp squad."
The Howard brothers attend training camps at the Manly Sea Eagles headquarters in Narabeen. They trained there for three days and really made an impact.
"We trained with the 30 man squad," Darcy said.
"There were times we were walking around and Des Hasler was coaching the Manly boys which was really cool. We got so much out of that camp. We had three blokes with us who played in the NSW under 18s in the curtain raiser before the State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium earlier in the year. To rub shoulders with them, we were over the moon."
"We were the only two there that weren't contracted to an NRL club," Jack said.
"We went in there and we just wanted to adsorb and learn as much as we could."
The Howard twins will be the first brother combo to take the field in the CIS under 18 team team since Tim and Jon Mannah.
"I couldn't believe it when I heard that from coach," Darcy said. "To go all the way from playing backyard footy to where we are now, to do it all with Jack is really cool."
"I'm so excited for the opportunity," Jack said. "This is something we've both wanted to do for a long time now. We wanted to play at this level together.
"This is something that I will remember for the rest of my life."
