Oxley College teacher, Meaghan Stanton, riding for Trek Shimano Australia, not only won the Masters 3 (40-44yr) National Title in the main cross country event (XCO) and the subsidiary event, the short course cross country (XCC), but also came in ahead of the female masters riders of all age groups in both races.
It was the third national XCO title in a row for Stanton, who was also awarded Masters Rider of the Year by Mountain Biking Australia (MTBA) at their annual awards night on Thursday.
"I was really honoured to receive the award from MTBA" said Stanton.
"It was a nice way to be acknowledged for the time and effort I've put into my mountain bike racing in the last two years, but it also made me more determined to hang onto my green and gold jersey for another year.
"I was up against some tough competitors this year, which made both wins extra sweet.
"The XCO course was fairly technical, with steep rocky climbs and descents, and I think that suited me well.
"The XCC is more of a sprint, so that was more about using good race tactics and then raw power at the end."
Karen Evans, always a steady performer for the Southern Highlands Cycling Club, came second in the Masters 5 (50-54yr) XCO and first in XCC, repeating her results from last year.
Her daughter, Maizy Evans, representing Illawarra Academy of Sport, rode strongly in the Under 17 Women's XCO for third place and just missed the podium in the XCC with fourth place.
Other Southern Highlands riders included Luke Skelly (U17 Men) 18th in XCO with a mechanical incident and fifth in XCC, Verity Evans (U19 Women) sixth in XCC, Cameron Butcher (U23 Men) 19th in XCO and Harrison Johnston (U17 Men) 46th in XCO and 25th in XCC.
