With a trial match locked in against Berry on Saturday, March 23, the Lionesses are looking to start their 2019 season off with a mighty roar.
“We’re looking for someone to fit into our culture, develop the girls’ skills and make sure they’re having fun while their playing,” said Simon Reid, Mittagong Lions Club secretary.
“We’re strong across the park from first grade all the way down to the juniors.
“The juniors and the ladies league tag is growing and that’s what we want to continue. We’re looking to continue to have all the grades available for the girls to further enhance their development.”
With touch and associated games such as Oztag rising in popularity, the Lions are all in on the progress of the sport and want to see their players continuing their skill progression and passion blossom.
“This year we’re looking for the ladies to continue their development,” Reid said.
“We’ve opted not to go with a ladies tackle team this year due to there wasn’t as much interest.
“A lot of the girls are keen to continue playing league tag. We’re listening to what the girls want and we want to make sure our girls continue to enjoy being a part of the Lions’ culture, honing their skill set and getting stronger.”

2018 was seen as a progressive season for the Lionesses. They won several games and their skills sharpened over the season. The club is hoping they can take the next step for the 2019 season.
“Obviously we want the girls to win and potentially be a part of the finals,” Reid said.
“They’re getting stronger and better. We need to continue developing their skills and that’s what we’re looking for in season 2019. The club will be hoping for the same from whoever takes over as the potential head coach.”
Bill Adrian was the previous head coach of the Lioness tag team, but couldn’t commit to coaching this season.
“Billy was great in the head coaching role last year,” Reid said.
“It will be a tough ask to follow in Billy’s steps and all the girls enjoyed playing for him, but we’ll try to find someone to slot into that role and take their skills to the next level.”
The Lions have a solid idea of who they would like to take over the reigns as head coach. They don’t have to be world class but must have the passion for development and instilling fun into the game.
“We’re looking for someone who has a fair idea of the game,” Reid said.
“They don’t have to be a rugby league coach, this isn’t the NRL. We just want someone who has a good idea about touch, Oztag or rugby league.”
