A new sculpture by renowned artist, David Ball, has been shipped across the continent to feature in the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in Cottesloe, WA.

Ball, who resides in the Southern Highlands, is known for his massive sculptures which work with and against the landscape. His newest work “Celest” is in the form of a stargate with an elevated position to lure viewers gaze to the sky. The work allows people to experience the environment in a new way.
As the recipient of the major prize at Sculpture by the Sea Bondi in 2017, Ball is a veteran when it comes to the mechanics behind transporting large scale sculptures.
After noting that he hasn’t got a picture of the completed work because his crane wasn’t big enough to hoist it together, he said, “you need to come up with ideas that will create wonder.”
“I’m always dreaming up concepts,” he said.
Celest is part of a series Ball has been working on for a couple of years which uses large circular forms. He seeks to explore different elements within each artwork.
Ball is excited for the opportunity to showcase his work on the other side of the country and to be involved with Sculpture by the sea.
“I really admire the fact that Sculpture by Sea has been going for over 20 years and it’s just extraordinary,” he said.
“They constantly construct things that have never been constructed before. Everything seeks to break boundaries.
“I’m overwhelmed by it, hats off to them.”
Ball will attend the exhibition in WA and said that he “looked forward to sitting on the beach,” so he could “take in the blue horizon.”
Photographs of Ball by local photographer Ashley Mackevicius will be showcased in an exhibition entitled A Butcher, A Baker, A Bunch of Makers set to open in Berrima February 20.
