Starting at Brisbane Grove Road riders headed out on the 22km out and back course which took riders over the Gundary Plain and past the airport before a short climb up to the plateau and the turnaround point at Bullamilita Road.
Five teams kitted out in aero body suits, tear drop helmets, freshly shaved legs and super high tech time trial bikes lined up at the start line. Sledging between the riders started several days before the race and intensified on the start line. But once Commissaire Phil Bush called each team to the line it was time to let the pedaling do the talking.
Each team rode well maintaining their formation throughout the whole race despite the presence of a strong cross wind. Some teams frequently swapped off their lead rider to share around the work load at the front while others opted for long turns at the front. Whatever the tactics there were impressive times from all the teams.
The Bora Hansgrohe team comprising Jeremy Gilchrist, Phil Champion, Robbie Dorsett and Wayne Skillman tore up the course in just over 32 minutes to post a winning time.
Wayne Bensley teamed with visiting riders Zac Hulm (Southern Highlands) and Boris Jakauhr (Coffs Harbour) in the Lotto Soudal team for second place.
Rounding out the podium this week was the Dimension Data team with Corey Peterson, Zacc Brodrick and Chris Berry.
Mitchelton Scott (Josh Daniel, Brendon Bassett, Alex Parlett) and Trek Segafredo (Tony Neate, Mark Stutuchbury, Jim Hoskins, Dale Nicholl) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Thanks to the volunteers – Phil, Mrs Bush, Fiona, Brian, Peter and Bluey.
