Beryl Cheers frequented the television set just as much as she did the stage. In the 1961 production of ‘The Sound of Music’ at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne, Beryl took the role of Sister Margaretta.
Beryl, who passed in 1981, will now have her family name continue its association with the theatre.
In a charming coincidence this November, the Highlands Theatre Group’s ‘Sound of Music’ stage production will feature the name ‘Cheers’ not only once but twice.
Beryl’s nephew, Steve Cheers will play the part of Von Trapp family friend, Max Detweiler.
The youngest member of the Von Trapp family, Gretl Von Trapp will be played also by the adolescent in the Cheers delegation, Bridget Cheers.
Onstage, there may only be two family members representing the Cheers clan but behind the curtains there’s one more.
Hannah Cheers will supervise some of the younger stage performers before they begin to tread the boards.
The Sound of Music performed by the Highlands Theatre Group will open November 2 at Mittagong Playhouse. Tickets can be purchased online from Trybooking.com.
To book tickets over the counter, go to Destination Southern Highlands 62-70 Main St, Mittagong, or call 4871 2888.
