A development application was submitted in 2016 for 51 - 59 Main Street and 8 Edward Lane, Mittagong.
The approved development is on the current site of a service station and a car yard.
It will encompass the Oporto restaurant and a hand car wash. It was approved by the Land and Environment Court through a section 34 agreement.
Both premises will have off street parking and access to Oporto will be from the Old Hume Highway and Alice Street.
While the site is within the Mittagong heritage conservation area, Weir Phillips Heritage who compiled a heritage impact statement said it would have minimal impact on the surrounding area.
“The proposed construction of the Oporto Restaurant and carwash will have some visual impact on heritage items in the vicinity. Visibility towards this site from Main Street will be reduced,” the statement said.
“The visual impact is mitigated through the sensitive design of the new premises, which is in keeping with the low bulk and scale of the surrounding area.”
The report said the development was in line with the premises continued use as a commercial site and the design respected the existing height, bulk and colour palette of the area.
A Statement of Environmental Impacts prepared by Precise Planning said there would be several benefits for the community, including economic and social.
“The development is an intensification of the commercial activity on the site and will contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of this commercial centre in the long term,” it said.
Romeo and Caroline Atra Pty Ltd are the owners of the site.
The consent will operate from January 9, 2018.
