This year, the cyclist has posted the goal of $100,000 for the fourth annual Cycle for Cancer.
Set to be held on May 19, the ride will take cyclists through some of Fitzroy Falls’ most challenging terrain to raise funds for an important cause.
The event is a five-hour or three-hour non-competitive mountain bike challenge for teams of two or four.
In the lead-up top the event, riders are set up with a fundraising page and are encouraged to raise as much as possible for the Cancer Council.
“The event has been established to raise funds for Cancer Council NSWs local programs, research and the prevention of cancer,” Zac said.
“Participants are therefore encouraged to gain sponsorship in any way possible, for example, per lap completed or a one off sponsorship for participation.”
Last year about 170 riders took part in the event and Zac hoped even more people would get involved this time around.
“It’s a fantastic event and it’s for an even better cause,” he said.
On September 4, 1996 Zac was told he had Leukemia.
As a result of the subsequent chemotherapy treatment he suffered a severe brain injury.
“It should have killed me but it didn’t,” he said.
At 17 he received a bone marrow transplant from his grandmother which saved his life.
“She definitely saved my life, without a doubt.”
As a survivor, he has worked hard over the past several years to raise money for various cancer foundations.
Zac set a goal to raise one million dollars for the cause by the time he turns 40.
And at 38, he’s almost there.
The Briars has signed on as a major sponsor for the event and Zac said he was very thankful for their support.
“They are really going all in on this and have been very supportive,” he said.
Teams have been encouraged to register for the event, to be held at Twin Cottages Fitzroy Falls.
