The Magic had a comfortable 71-58 win over the Hornsby Spiders at the Moss Vale Basketball Stadium last Saturday afternoon in front of a healthy crowd of supporters from both clubs.
It was a tight contest in the first half with the teams going to half time locked at 32-32.
It took a barnstorming last quarter from the Magic to wear down a plucky Spiders team who refused to give in and take a 13-point win.
The Magic were led by Carter Reeves who was on fire for the locals with a game high and career high 36 points in what was a dominant MVP performance.
This included four three pointers drawing praise from the Magic coaching staff.
"I was really happy for Carter tonight, he was been in the squad for a few years now and really stood up tonight,” coach Kev Campbell said.
“He showed everyone what he is capable of doing on the floor.
“When he is in that frame of mind there is not much the opposition can do to stop him which augurs well for the rest of our season.”
Reeves was well supported by Marko Laus with 12 points and Zac Ottosson with 11 points.
However it was the defensive effort of his teams performance that was most pleasing for coach Kev Campbell.
"We have set ourselves a culture this year to really focus on and become known for our defence, both individually and collectively as a team,” Campbell said.
“I want to try and limit our opposition to 60 points or less per game. If we do that we will put ourselves in a position to win more games than we lose and we certainly did that pretty well on Saturday night.” Youth League rookies Luke Davenport and Will Cunich made their debuts for the Magic in this game.
Both players putting in good solid performances to show that they can certainly play at this level.
They will no doubt be looking forward to the rest of the season. The Magic will now turn their attention to the Camden Valley Wildfire who they will meet in round two action at home. The game will be played on Saturday afternoon at the Moss Vale Basketball Stadium with tipoff at 5pm.
The Wildfire also had a strong 82-54 win over the Springwood Scorchers in their opening match.
It all augurs well for a great game of basketball this Saturday afternoon at the "House Of Magic" in Moss Vale. Visit www.facebook.com/mvbasketball for more information.
