This is not surprising. It is about having a roof over your, our, their heads.
There is national concern about Australia growing faster than any other nation and not being prepared for today let alone for tomorrow's extras. This poses a major challenge as to how and where to accommodate people. A new challenge? No.
Just one which has been neglected for so long and to such an extent that it is currently a threatening monster.
What can be done? What is blocking the flow of appropriate housing to meet mixed needs in the Southern Highlands? What could be done to free up a more appropriate, affordable range here and now?
A May 2012 Wingecarribee Shire Council demographic and housing study states, "Wingecarribee will require a higher proportion of medium density housing and infill development to accommodate the growing population".
The study details principles such as transport, mixed land use, walkability, and "...a wide range of housing choices to provide for different needs and incomes.
Traditional houses on their own blocks will be available along with smaller, lower maintenance homes, units and terraces for older people and younger singles or couples".
So why are groups mentioned above finding it so hard to get accommodation they can afford? Why are people having to leave their, our Shire and their friendly networks built over a lifetime? Why are some people sleeping in cars?
Can we as a community play deaf to the needs of some of our most vulnerable locals? Can we afford to cease asking these questions?
