Mr Straw has had a lifelong interest in the conservation of wetlands which provide the specific habit required by the members of the wader family of birds.
He began his apprenticeship in 1960 working with the late Dr Luc Hoffmann, founding father of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands of international importance, especially for waterbirds.
After two months into a four month volunteer period, he was offered a full time position as Ornithologist research assistant, studying bird migration and wetlands management.
He went on to work in research projects all around the world associated with institutions such Trinity College, Oxford University and others under the Ramsar umbrella.
Since migrating to Australia he has worked with the Queensland University and several government agencies to help broaden the understanding of threats to wader habitats.
Mr Straw was the driving force in the formation of the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP) in 1996.
He has worked extensively with a multitude of birding organisations in most countries along the flyway which extends from the artic areas, through Japan and down to Australia.
He will share his wealth of knowledge about all the world’s waders, including Latham’s Snipe at the first BirdLife Southern Highlands information night for 2018 on February 27.
