The athletes competed in a ‘Battle of Benton’ CrossFit competition, with over a hundred spectators watching the action. Organised by Benton Crossfit, the pairs exercise contest attracted athletes aged from their teens to their 60s, with a harder and easier level of intensity offered to suit all levels of ability. The all-day indoors and outdoors event at the Braemar gym required 75 two-person teams to complete six workouts that included kettle bell runs and swings, sled pulls, sandbag running, burpees, clean and jerks, dumbbell lunges, box jumps and wallball throws.
Many Benton CrossFit members worked on the day to help run the event but several Benton CrossFit teams also competed, with one local pair – Holly Furness and Alicia Guy - finishing third in the scaled female competition. The winners of the main, full weight division for men were the Nevell/Munro team from Brookvale in Sydney, while the Williams/Blandford team from Newcastle took first place in the full weight contest for women.
“It’s great to see how CrossFit can draw together so many like-minded people...” Ben Garard said.
And the Sturt/Ormerod duo from the Blue Mountains topped the male/female full weight ladder.
Benton CrossFit owner, Ben Garard, said the inaugural ‘Battle of Benton’ proved a huge success and would become an annual event.
“All the competitors demonstrated true strength, endurance and powerful mateship in the way they completed the workouts together which was awesome to watch,” Ben said. “It’s great to see how CrossFit can draw together so many like-minded people from far and wide to celebrate the way this sport builds your strength, fitness and fortitude as well as your social network.”
