A new company has offered a way to convert traditionally non-recyclable waste – such as coffee capsules, cigarette butts and food wrappers – into garden beds and playgrounds.
Terracycle offers free national recycling programs that collects traditionally non-recyclable waste which allows schools to earn donations for themselves or send them to a nominated non-profit organisation.
Although a popular snack, squeezable yoghurt pouches are difficult to recycle because of their mixed- material composition. TerraCycle’s Whole Kids Pouch and Snack Recycling Program allows kids, parents and teachers to recycle yoghurt pouches, caps, tubes and packaging and send to TerraCycle free-of- charge.
For each piece of Whole Kids pouch and snack waste sent to TerraCycle, schools will earn $0.02.
Schools can calso ombine the importance of dental hygiene and sustainability in one lesson with TerraCycle’s Oral Care Recycling Program.
Kids and teachers can recycle toothpaste tubes, caps, toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes outer packaging and floss containers. Since 2014, TerraCycle Australia has recycled more than 300,000 pieces of oral care waste otherwise destined for landfill.
The company also operates five separate recycling programs for Nespresso, NESCAFE Dolce Gusto, EXPRESSI and L’OR coffee capsules, and Lipton tea capsules.
Consumers simply make a TerraCycle account at www.terracycle.com.au and sign up for the programs that suit them. Once enough hard-to- recycle waste has been collected, collectors log into their TerraCycle account and print a free prepaid Australia Post shipping label to return their collection box or satchel at no cost.
