Many residents in the southern villages feel Bundanoon Pool has been underutilised.
And for the past two years, they have been hard at work to change this.
The Bundanoon community pool subcommittee hopes to soon have a retractable sectional roof over the pool so it could be used during winter and open longer during summer.
The proposed retractable roof could also be partially opened during warmer months.
The structure itself would sit on flush tracking and could be manually operated.
“Our aim is to make better use of our pool rather than the short period that it is open for now,” subcommittee convenor Henk Janssen said.
“We have done a great deal of work, met with engineers, a pool roof enclosure company, council meetings and really are at a stage where we need council approval to be able to proceed to source funding.”
Council is currently undertaking a review of all its aquatic services prior to the development of an Aquatic Strategy.
Mr Janssen said the group had provided council staff, the general manager and all councillors with a copy of their proposal.
The proposal said the community was not seeking funding from council for capital works.
The Bundanoon Community Association has sought an Agreement in Principle and has asked for:
- Formal acceptance to consider the proposal
- Agreement to allow the Bundanoon Community Association to apply for community grants
- Seed funding to employ a consultant to prepare all documentation for council.
Bundanoon Pool first opened in 1960 and was run by volunteers until this became too difficult and the running of the pool was handed over to council.
“This will enhance the Bundanoon sporting precinct by giving all year access to a facility which is significantly under utilised, management and climatic constraints,” the proposal said.
“The opening hours of the pool are constrained by council’s operational management, leaving the community with the pool not open during the swimming season at times, when there is a need for the facility to be open. This has resulted in a lack of patronage, not a lack of interest.”
A rally in support of the proposal will be held at Bundanoon Pool on Saturday, March 3 from 2-4pm.
