The 16-year-old was accepted into the San Diego Surf College Cup Showcase, and was one of the youngest players to travel to the United States with the NSW under 17s team late last year.
Lewis received email from a coach from Lassen College in California recently, with an offer for a place at college this year.
While Lewis was unable to accept the offer as she has to finish school, it felt like a step in the right direction.
“It was an amazing feeling,” she said. “It still doesn’t feel real, I’m still trying to get over the fact that I had one offer.” Lewis played in three competitive games and two social games during the showcase. She was among other players from Australia, Canada, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, South Korea and the US. “The first game I don’t think I played well due to the jet lag but in the second game I played well,” Lewis said. “Scoring two goals was the highlight of my trip.”
“The girls were so nice and they were more skillful, I learnt so much.”
Lewis said she hoped to return to the United States one day to pursue the sport and to study nursing. “Going over there was amazing. I definitely want to go back after school, I already have the option. It’s always been my dream.”
