Those who stock up on products like exercise books, paper and pencils from Officeworks throughout the month of January, will help restore the Highlands region, with nearly 20000 seedlings or seeds planted nationally as a result.
The planting is part of Restoring Australia, an environmental initiative in partnership with Greening Australia, which aims to help local wildlife and communities flourish by establishing native plants in the landscapes, increasing water quality and revegetating bushland.
The Southern Highlands contains some of Australia’s most intact mountain ecosystems, but those precious ecosystems now face a wide range of threats, including habitat loss and invasive species.
As part of Restoring Australia, Officeworks and its customers are helping to create a 3600km wildlife corridor of acacia and eucalypt varieties which will help save plant, animal and bird species from extinction.
NSW farm manager Stephen Burgun said Restoring Australia has had a great impact on his property and surrounding areas.
“I manage Arthursleigh Farm owned by Sydney University, a 7,000-hectare farm near Goulburn and through Restoring Australia, seeds were planted on site in August 2017 and we are already seeing them flourish,” he said.
“With my own children going back to school and university this year, it’s great to know it will have a direct impact in helping restore the native flora and fauna around Arthursleigh.”
NSW Senior Project Manager at Greening Australia, Ian Rayner said it was very worthwhile project.
“We are delighted to be part of rebuilding the Southern Highlands through Restoring Australia,” he said.
“Our vision is coming together to help create healthy and productive landscapes across Australia – this sits at the heart of this initiative with Officeworks.”
