The rally is the largest off-road event in the world and is watched by more people than any other yearly sporting event.
None of that fazed Southern Highlands product Scott Britnell though.
Britnell, on bike number 97, has entered the 2018 Dakar Rally, in the Malle Moto class – where you work on your own bike for two weeks as you race across 9500km of mountains, dunes and rocks, while traversing three countries – Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.
He will have no support, except what you can muster up from fellow, exhausted competitors.
Just finishing the Dakar is an achievement, so to finish it on your own is an absolutely awesome achievement.
But with a military background, Britnell, no doubt has the will and determination to get him through this demanding race – the 40th edition of the event.
His ability to ride an off road motorcycle is backed up by his recent record ride across Australia.
Britnell rode on his own from Byron Bay, the most Eastern point of Australia, to Steep Point, the most Western point, off road (approximately 5000km) in 72 hours and 10 minutes.
The race started in January 6 and will finish on January 20. Visit the Scott Britnell – Go Ride It Facebook page to stay up-to-date with Britnell’s journey.
