Emergency services were called to Jamberoo Road, about 7am Thursday January 11, after a white Commodore crashed into a pole.
A man was seen running from the scene.
A perimeter has established and police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command are now looking for the man.
They are being assisted by the Dog Unit and Polair.
Traffic on some roads in the area may be disrupted as the operation continues.
Motorists are urged to look out for, and give way to, emergency vehicles.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said the driver, a man, allegedly fled the single vehicle crash on foot.
The spokeswoman said it was possible that some roads were blocked, but as the crews “cleared them” they would be opened up.
“We haven’t confirmed if it has been stolen,” she said.
