Ellie Fleming and sisters Emily and Katelyn Hall have been selected to play in the All Girls Rugby Tournament in Hong Kong.
In order to be selected, the three had to participate in a four-hour trial at the University of Wollongong playing fields. The trial assessed prospective team members’ running, passing and tackling abilities.
The final Hong Kong team was narrowed down to 13 players.
The three will be overseas for five days from March 28, where they will play two days’ worth of games and experience some of the region’s major tourist attractions.
In the lead-up to the trip, the players will train at least twice a week to prepare.
Ellie Fleming said she felt excited about the opportunity to play overseas.
I’m looking forward to [challenging] different people from around the world and the experience of being overseas.
- Emily Hall
“I’m really excited, it’s a pretty cool opportunity,” Fleming said. “When I went to the trials, I pushed myself really hard. “I’ve never been overseas before, I want to see what [rugby 7s] is like over there.”
Emily Hall said the three were looking forward to competing against players from around the world. “I’m looking forward to [challenging] different people from around the world and the experience of being overseas,” Hall said. “We got pushed to our hardest [in the four-hour trial]. You have to keep up that training.”
The trip has been the result of several years’ worth of hard work.
All three girls play for the Bowral Blacks and have a scholarship with the Illawarra Academy of Sport.
The players have been heavily involved with the sport. In September last year the girls competed in the rugby 7s 15s girls state championship in Coffs Harbour.
The three are currently looking for businesses and individuals to sponsor their trip. Contact: Karen Fleming on 0417 869 710
