Lyn and Allan Morehen celebrated their 50th anniversary in Bundanoon on December 23, with guests and messages from around the world.
The couple has been energised by challenges: a new recipe, a new restaurant, a new sailing venture, a new country to live in, a new career. Their spirit of adventure saw them move to Africa, embrace evolving technological advances, and settle in a Australia, a land of opportunity, in Melbourne, then Sydney, and now the Southern Highlands.
Allan’s niece Jane Morehen, bridesmaid at their 1967 London wedding and now a Queenslander, travelled to Bundanoon for the golden occasion. Best man Don Goodsell, who travelled to Sydney 10 years ago for the ruby celebration, this time sent a message from Canterbury in UK.
Gardening guru Elwyn Swane proposed the toast, recalling Lyn’s service to the community as long-time Mosman Garden Club president in Sydney. Elwyn spoke for many when she referred to Lyn’s infectious personality and Allan’s quirky sense of humour.
The Morehens value family and friends. they have inspired friendships from around the world and opened their doors to those friends, to extended family and to guests. Their hospitality is legendary.
Royal Brighton Yacht Club in Melbourne and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron have been important as Lyn and Allan extended their circles of friends in new environments, and many members of those clubs paid tribute at their 50th.
The Morehens are active players in Bundanoon, members of the Community Association and Garden Club. Lyn is a contributor to Jordan’s Crossing Gazette and a chorister with Bundanoon Sings. Asked about the secret to their long and successful marriage, they told the guests at their celebration that they have travelled the same journey.
From Africa, lawyer Mwambi Kasakwa reminded Lyn and Allan that, in their time in Zambia, they took in his father Edward and sponsored his education. “I need you to know that because of your kindness many years ago to one man, you changed the course of an entire generation.” There was not a dry eye at Bundanoon Guest House.
