The combination of spiced fruit and dense cakey-pudding can take up to a month to prepare and many people would much prefer to buy one than labour over one.
Two Highlanders have recently taken on a business centered around creating homemade, decadent Christmas puddings.
Nephew and Uncle, who are more like brothers, Nick Levy and Pete Cohn have operated pudding company, Grandmas Table, since August this year.
The business came to the pair in a somewhat unconventional way.
“Long story short I was looking for a pre-retirement sort of hobby business and saw an ad at the top of website that said ‘seasonal food business for sale’ so I clicked on it,” Pete said.
It turned out to be a Christmas pudding business owned by a couple from Canberra in their 70s.
“They had been running the business for about 30 years and they were ready to retire and it seemed like the perfect business for us,” Pete said.
Nick and Pete used a kitchen space at the Old Cheese Factory in Robertson to prepare more than 10,000 kilograms of puddings for the festive season.
“We employed people from the area, mums who had kids at school, and they worked a few days a week to cook all the puddings,” Pete said.
The puddings were then stored at a Kennards Self Storage warehouse in Mittagong before distribution.
“It’s all been kept quite local which has been great,” Pete said.
Next year, the company will move into a warehouse space in Moss Vale.
“We will have a full warehouse and kitchen in the one place and we are really excited about that,” Pete said.
The family business partners also think they will double the production of the previous owners before too long.
“They wanted to keep the business quite small but we have the potential and the scope to grow it,” Pete said.
Pete described the first pudding season as “a big learning curve.”
“It was all about getting to know the business and learning about cooking, distributing and selling, it’s been fantastic.”
As the company name suggests, the puddings look just like they’ve come from your very own grandma’s kitchen table.
Dressed in calico and ready to boil, these locally made "Sweetwater Creek" plum puddings are available only at 10 Thousand Paces in Bowral in the lead up to Christmas.
