1. Christmas market fair. Saturday, December 9, 8am to 1pm. Bowral Uniting Church, corner of Boolwey and Bendooley Streets.
Find lovely hand-crafted and home-made gifts at this weekend’s fair. Handmade Christmas cards, ginger bread houses, jams and preserves, craft, books, bric-a-brac and plants will be for sale, alongside a barbecue sausage sizzle, Devonshire teas, coffee and freshly baked scones with jam and cream.
2. Windows into Wartime. Saturday and Sunday, December 9 and 10, 10am to 4pm (open daily until January 29). Berrima District Museum, corner of Market Place and Bryan Streets, Berrima.
An exhibition of photographs from the state archives and records of NSW are travelling across the nation to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the First World War. This collection features historic images produced by the NSW Government Printing Office during and immediately after WWI. As government photographers were shooting their images, they were not only documenting but shaping how NSW mobilised in support of Australia's war effort. Today, this collection of images reproduced from original glass plate negatives provides us with a unique insight into the NSW home front during the war.
3. Christmas in the gardens. Saturday, December 9, 4pm to 7pm. Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens.
An early evening picnic will be held in the botanic gardens, to show off the development of the green space and celebrate the silly season. There will be a plant sale featuring hydrangeas and many hard-to-find perennials, as well as a sausage sizzle and refreshments. Entry is free and you are welcome to bring your own picnic.
4. Lebanese Film Festival. Saturday, December 9, 6:30pm to 10:30pm. Artemis Wines, 46 Sir Charles Moses Lane, Mittagong.
In a first for the Highlands, the St George Bank Lebanese Film Festival will present a feature film. The highly acclaimed 'Where Do We Go Now?' directed by one of Lebanon's great female directors, Nadine Labaki, will be screening outdoors at Artemis Winery.
Event organiser Camille Lattouf said he hoped to fill the multicultural void in the Southern Highlands. “There isn’t much Lebanese film content in the Highlands – it doesn’t really get a look in.
“Film offers a really good insight into other cultures and traditions – a different perspective to what you normally see on the news. Lebanese film oftens reflects the political and cultural climate of the country, and provides and alternative perspective on people and places.” Tickets are $45 and include the screening and one complimentary drink from the Artemis bar. Woodfired pizza will also be for sale – take a picnic blanket or whatever you'll find comfortable to sit on.
5. Jazz concert fundraiser. Sunday, December 10, 4pm to 7pm. The Mill, 210-224 Bong Bong Street, Bowral.
A tribute will be held for Australia’s first lady of jazz at the venue where she made her final public appearance. The Janet Seidel Choice Band will perform at The Mill, raising funds for Rare Cancers Australia.
