Bowral Bowling Club and Robertson Bowling Club players gathered at Robertson Bowling Club for the 20th annual John Crowe and Bill Brenning Memorial Challenge on December 3.
Competitors played singles, pairs, triples and fours rounds during the challenge.
Bowral retained the Crowe-Brenning Cup, and won the singles, triples and fours matches.
The annual challenge commemorated the lives of former lawn bowls players John Crowe and Bill Brenning.
Crowe started playing bowls at Robertson Bowling Club, and moved to Bowral Bowling Club.
The player won more singles tournaments than any other player at Robertson Bowling Club.
He also competed in the state triples in 1993 with fellow players Ken Handley and Ken Pope.
Crowe died in 1996 and the cup was inaugurated in 1997 by Brenning and Bowral lawn bowls player Russell Fahey.
Brenning died in 2011, and was a valued member of Robertson Bowling Club.
Crowe’s widow Jocelyn Crowe and sister Elva Wright were in attendance, as well as Brenning’s widow Ann.
Crowe said the annual challenge meant a lot to her family, and Brenning’s family.
“I really appreciate them carrying on the tradition,” Crowe said.
I’m thrilled they carry it on with good sportsmanship.

“We’ve had new bowlers [in the challenge], and they never knew him.
“I’m thrilled they carry it on with good sportsmanship.”
Co-founder of the challenge and Bowral Bowling Club player Russell Fahey said the day brought the two clubs together. “The camaraderie still exists. We have a good time every year,” Fahey said. “It’s great that it’s still going to this day.”
