The Goulburn-based trainer will take part in the races for the second time.

Burleigh entered the annual event for the first time in 2016 with horse Reverence, owned by Waratah Thoroughbreds. The trainer took out the 1000m Maiden Plate in her debut. Prior to her work as a trainer, Burleigh was an apprentice jockey for four years. She also honed her skills as a foreman with the late Graham Spackman, who was a prominent Highlands horse trainer.

This year Burleigh has entered horse One Sunday into the 2300m Maiden Plate race. Burleigh said while the distance presented a challenge for One Sunday, the horse has been in fine form.

“It’s her first time over this distance. A few horses [in the Maiden Plate race] are doing the same,” she said.

“Because she’s never been over this distance it is a challenge - but she’s fit and well so that’s good.” Burleigh said she was confident of the horse’s chances in the race on Friday. “I hope that we will leave as a winner,” she said. “As long as we go there, have a nice time and get the horse home safe and sound, that’s the important thing.” The race will commence at 3pm at Bong Bong Racecourse.
