Effie is remembered as a “strong woman who worked hard.”

She was instrumental in the creation of the Vietnam War Memorial and Cherry Tree Walk in Settlers Park, Bowral.

And soon, she will be remembered at this very place. 

At the November 22 council meeting, councillors voted on a motion to install a memorial brass plaque in Effie’s memory.  

Councillors used the words, “remarkable”, “dedicated”, “strong” and “determined” to describe Effie. 

In 1993 she established the Bowral Vietnam Memorial Trust and in 1996 fundraising commenced for the memorial and walk. 

It was suggested that 504 trees be planted to represent the number of Australians who died in the Vietnam War.

During the fundraising stage, Effie gave people the option to buy a cherry tree for $50 as a way to remember family and friends who fought. 

The project gained support not just from Wingecarribee Shire Council, but from people right across the country. 

On Sunday, August 22 1999 the Vietnam War Memorial and Cherry Tree Walk were officially opened, with more than 2000 Vietnam veterans in attendance.

Cr Grahame Andrews said it was time to honour the woman so instrumental in an important part of Highlands history. 

“Without Effie’s dedication and commitment to honour those who fought in the Vietnam War, the Bowral Vietnam Memorial would not have been possible,” he said. 

“She was a remarkable woman who, without an family involvement in conflict, decided to do something tangible to recognise those who fought and died in the Vietnam War.”

Mr Andrews suggested that the plaque be erected at the base of an ornamental pear tree planted south of the war monument.
