A relatively easy hour and a half drive to the city, a 45-minute drive to the nearest beach, great school options for children, impressive restaurants and cafes aplenty and most of the modern conveniences at our doorsteps.
But perhaps the greatest appeal of this community is the stunning environment in which it is set. Regardless of whether it is summer, autumn, winter or spring Mother Nature delivers the goods as far as the natural appeal of the Southern Highlands is concerned.
Sure, there will always be people in the community that would prefer to look at the glass half empty when it comes to the Southern Highlands…or any community for that matter.
They will no doubt say it is too cold in winter, contributed too much to allergies in spring, too many leaves on the ground to clean up in autumn and too far from the beach in summer. But the appeal of this region is laid on for anyone with a glass half full attitude.
The autumn colour is picturesque to say the least. The climate at that time of year inspires people to get out in the clean, fresh air. It is a great time to take in the sights on a bushwalk, pick some mushrooms or simply enjoy some alfresco dining.
Meanhwile, who doesn’t enjoy rugging up in a coat, scarf, beanie and gloves when heading outside in a Highlands winter. Even more enticing is the opportunity to sit by an fire, drink hot chocolate and maybe even enjoy a dusting of winter snow.
Then there is what can only be described as a truly spectacular spring time where flowers put on a stunning blooming showcase and tree-lined streets shine with a refreshing display of greenery.
And of course we can’t forget summer. The days can get very warm but most nights drop to a comfortable, balmy temperature.
With out a doubt the Southern Highlands has plenty of appeal.
Those of us who are fortunate to call the Southern Highlands home should never miss an opportunity to step outside, breath in the fresh air, savour the many natural attractions and make the most of a wonderful back yard.
Right now that back yard is a picture perfect showcase of tree-lined streets, wildlife in abundance and flourishing gardens and bushland to be enjoyed from almost every vantage point.
