Bowral first grade match report round four
Bowral took on Mittagong under gloomy skies at Lackey Park in Round 4 of the 1st grade competition. Skipper Chris Weller lost the toss and Bowral was sent into bat on a juicy wicket from the recent rain. After losing an early wicket, runs were hard to come by early on as the conditions were conducive to swing and cut off the pitch. Bowral worked their way to a respectable 3/60 at drinks with Dave Spies the mainstay. A fourth wicket partnership of 65 between Spies and Angus Lowden steered the game back in Bowral’s favour. Unfortunately, when Lowden was dismissed, Bowral lost their remaining 6 wickets for only 17 runs. The total of 136 was about 50 runs short of expectations. Dave Spies was ninth man out for a very patient 84 in difficult conditions.
Bowral took to the field knowing they would have to bowl Mittagong out in order to take the points. Murray Burgoyne exploited the conditions well with some lethal swing and cut, however unfortunately came up empty handed. Meanwhile at the other end, Zac de Hosson continued his terrorisation of the Mittagong batting line up with yet another probing spell of fast bowling. Wickets fell regularly as Mittagong went on the attack, however Bowral put down some chances at inopportune times. When the last of the recognised batsmen fell with the score on 131, Bowral was in with a chance. Unfortunately for Bowral, the Mittagong tail was able to complete the chase 8 wickets down. Zac finished with his second 6-wicket haul against Mittagong this season, while two other bowlers each took one wicket.
Bowral 136 (D. Spies 84, A. Lowden 27; J. Edwards 5/11) def by Mittagong 8/137 (A. Debs 41; Z. de Hosson 6/31)
Bowral second grade match report round five
Bowral 2nds faced up against an on-song Wingello side at Bill O'Reilly Oval in Wingello, which is somewhere in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
With Graham Brake once again called into 1st grade, Andrew Macleod was handed the privilege of captaining the 2nd grade side. On a dry but overcast November afternoon and on a wicket renowned for its gradient (similar to Lords, no doubt), the ball was expected to swing. And swing it did.
Winning the toss, Bowral made the unorthodox choice to bowl first. This move paid off immediately, with the Coke-fuelled drifter Angus Fitzsimons clean bowling Wingello's opener with the first ball of the match. Unfortunately, we weren't able to capitalise on that early wicket and Wingello steadily built their innings, finishing with 4 for 229 off their 40 overs. Tyson Stanton (1/27 off 8), Peter de Hotdogs (1 for 40 off 8, although it would've been better had the skipper held that slips catch), Oscar Murton (0 for 41 off 6), Angus Fitzsimons (2 for 35 off 8) and Josh Knox (0 for 37 off 5) all put in good bowling performances.
With some fantastic swing bowling from Wingello's opening bowlers, Bowral's batsmen struggled for runs. Wickets fell quickly and we found ourselves in the unenviable position of being 6 for 59 and staring down the barrel of a massive defeat. Despite it being his birthday (22 years old, happy birthday sunshine!), Jeremy Hore was unable to repeat his powerhouse performances from recent matches and was bowled for a duck. Some tidy batting late in the innings by Josh Knox (17), Oscar Murton (17), Greg Cruger (36) and Tyson Stanton (21) restored some respectability to our total although we fell short, being all out for 166.
Although we didn't win on the day, all up it was a sound performance by our Bowral 2nd grade side. There are some signs that we're improving as a side and the first win of the season is just around the corner. And Josh Knox has asked me not to mention that he gave his captain out LBW, so I won't mention it.
Bowral third grade match report round five
Bowral third grade were back at Stephens Park for round 5.
The plan was near flawless- Win the toss, send them in on a green top in overcast conditions and let our seamers rip apart their top order and let our batsmen chase what would hopefully be a modest total……. A good plan that was undoubtedly leaked to the opposition and well adopted by Robbo. There will be an enquiry
We lost the toss (yes yes yes I hear you all and I’m ignoring all of you) They sent us in on a green top in overcast conditions and their seamers ripped apart our batting and chased down a modest total of 114.
Glenn Harrington and myself opened the batting and after a slow start took the score to 59 before I was bowled by a dipping full toss when on 27. Not the best shot and the first of seven batsmen bowled in our innings. Glenn continued his good form and didn’t look in trouble until the ball that dismissed him on 34. Ethan Holloway showed us that he has more runs in him undefeated on 15 that contained a sweetly timed 6 and a lot of application. It would be fair to say that no one threw away their innings however either a lapse in concentration or a good delivery meant our total would take some good bowling and a fair share of luck to defend.
Well, our bowlers bowled a lot better than the scorecard suggests.
Conner Gilmore picked up 2 wickets with well held catches. Another screamer at slip (who is that guy?) and a very well judged effort by Aaron Preddy taking a high ball over his head. His first catch for the club and one to remember. Conner also bowled many that were just unplayable and is in a bit of a purple patch with his control. Hayden Koek seamed the ball both ways picking up a few edges but none went to hand. Very unlucky. Amit Bhatia accuracy and control was eventually rewarded when he clean bowled their no.4 and also had edges go close to hand. Ethan bowled with great control swinging in many to the right handers who were very watchful. A few near misses there. Darc’y Gotterson also bowled well producing a lot of swing at times but not all the time which made him difficult to play.
A special mention for Lachlan Cooper whose debut showed that he is not out of place. Out to a good catch when batting (at least he didn’t get bowled) and bowled 2 solid overs with more than a couple of good deliveries in there and gave everything he could in the field. Well done.
Will Clarke’s spell once again was a mixture of pace and swing and at one point had the batsmen ducking for cover and at another point had cover ducking. A fiery spell and a reminder that he is a fast bowler to watch out for. I think his run up is getting longer.
The bowling perhaps deserved a better return but you can’t take anything away from Robertson. They chased the small total set up by their bowlers with patience and deserved the win.

Bowral Renshaws match report round three (Primary)
Today felt more like a footy Saturday than a cricket day as the Boons hosted the Renshaw’s under damp and cold conditions at Stephen Park. Boons Captain Charlie won the toss and elected to bowl. The Renshaw’s found runs hard to come by with some tidy bowling early on. We were losing wickets regularly with James the only batsman to retire not out. The Boons looked to have the Renshaw’s on the ropes at the 10 over mark, we were staring down an early close to the innings when James returned to the crease joining Tommy to see out the remaining overs and posting a par score of 75. James finished not out 16 off 33 balls and Tommy 14 off 37.
Knowing our total was very gettable, we needed to be good in the field. Harry didn’t have a chance with the bat today, so took the most of his opportunity with the ball. Taking 2 wickets in his first over certainly lifted the confidence of the Renshaw’s. The Boons wouldn’t go down without a fight though, good early calls and great running between the wickets saw the Boons taking the challenge to the Renshaw’s. Despite the early wickets, the momentum was with the Boons but for a brilliant spell of bowling from Liam, Will and James bowling 4 maidens in a row to stifle the run rate and build much needed pressure on the batting side. The pressure forced risky running and produced 3 run outs effected by James, Tom and the last by Aaron running in from mid-wicket. Renshaw’s coming out victors by just 9 runs. Harry finished with 3 for 10, unlucky not to get a hat trick. A great game by all involved and for the good crowd of parents watching. Thanks to Tim Liddiard for scoring the match.
Bowral Maxwells match report round three (Primary)
The toss, won by Sam McMahon for the Maxwells, saw the Starcs bat first in soggy conditions. Maeve Kaufline opened the bowling and was on target from the outset. Good line and length bowling saw Maeve claim the prized scalp of Sam Mackay finishing her spell with 1/4. Another notable performance in the bowling attack was Will deHaan who bowled two maidens from his three overs. Will finished with the commendable figures of 1/1.
Hamish McRobbie, Hugh White and Louie Kaufline all claimed vital wickets in the match helping to put the brakes on the Starcs’ run scoring. Hamish finished with 1/8 while Louie and Hugh both finished with 1/5 from their overs. Sam McMahon once again showed true pace with his bowling and, although he didn’t claim a wicket, he certainly made a dent in the Starcs’ ability to get the scoreboard ticking over. By the end of the innings the Maxwells had managed to keep the highly fancied Starcs to a modest total of 5/45 from the 20 overs. Dante Maynard rejoined the team this week and showed his value to the team with some great glove work behind the stumps. Dante’s skills certainly helped limit the number of sundries and thus the Starcs total.
The Maxwells went into their innings full of confidence. Having scored over 100 run the previous week the Maxwells considered a target of 46 very gettable. However, as the innings unfolded that assumption was certainly put to the test.
Louie Kaufline and Will deHaan opened the batting once again. Will was powerful in his stroke play and was well supported by Louie at the non-striker’s end. However, their partnership was brought to an early close after some good bowling by Mali from the Starcs. Artemis Maynard joined Will deHaan at the crease in the third over and got to work on the bowling attack. He found the boundary early on and was threatening to send the ball away again when he was beaten by a good delivery from Kaileb. Artemis departed for 6 runs.
Hugh, Sam and Dante were all showing early promise in their innings but were all claimed by some great bowling by Ben Whyte. The team was in trouble at 5/30 with only two batsmen remaining. Once again Henry McMahon stepped up to salvage the innings and get the scoreboard moving the right direction. Both he and Maeve Kaufline managed to work the ball through the field to steal sneaky singles to help the team move beyond the target score. Great work Maeve and Henry!
The Maxwells finished the innings with 6/47 to claim the win. Some very excited players then stormed the pitch to celebrate a nail-biting victory. Thanks to the Starcs for a very close game. Congratulations to their players for the way in which they played and for their sportsmanship throughout.
Bowral Boons match report round three (Primary)
After a wet morning and some pitch mopping up (thanks Simon) Bowral Boons won the toss and sent Bowral Renshaws in to bowl.
After some early wickets we had the Renshaws staring down the barrel of an early innings, but to their credit they came back and put a total on of 75 runs for us to chase down.
Our girls opened the batting and Ava took off like a rocket running between wickets at every opportunity. Toby, Charlie and Harry K retired not out and returned in but Renshaws bowling attack was on a mission, claiming two quick wickets which saw us left with no wickets in hand. We chased hard only to be run out in the 16thover. With another wicket in hand I am pretty sure that the result may have been different.
Congratulations to my players on their great sportsmanship on and off the field, you never drop your heads and are always so positive towards each other, especially on the field, you really are great kids. Your running between wickets was commended by the Bowral Renshaws coach which we have worked hard on over the last few games and to keep our no balls under 30 was our goal this week, which we achieved.
Congratulations to the Renshaws and Putto for the rest of the season and thankyou for a great nail biting game.
Thanks Peter and Glenn for always putting your hand up to help me with scoring and umpiring.
Also, a big thankyou to Simon Taufel our Club Patron for presenting all of the Bowral Primary kids with their baggys, certainly a moment that they will never forget.
Best on field today goes to Xander Murko.
Bowral Starcs match report round three (Primary)
Round 4 saw the Bowral Starc’s face the Bowral Maxwell’s on a heavy & drizzly home track. The Maxwell’s won the toss sending us in to bat. Batting was hard with excellent bowling & fielding by the Maxwell’s restricting our total to a low 5/45. Some solid defence came from Billy Byrne-Pierce steading the ship with 4 no over 20 overs.
The Starc’s set about on the field with not many runs in the bank to defend.
Starting from where they finished the previous week backing each other with another brilliant display of bowling & fielding. Mali Cassar ,Kaileb Evangelista & Harry Hiscock all taking wickets.
Ben Whyte took the ball and claimed 3 game changing wickets which you would have paid to watch. A very sharp caught and bowled was Ben’s final wicket had the game hanging by a thread with 3 runs or 1 wicket for the win. A very exciting match with the Maxwell’s hitting the winning runs Winning 6/47 .
Well done Starc’s & Maxwells for an entertaining Saturday morning.
The player’s player award went to Ben Whyte.
