Klibur Domin (meaning “Love of God”) is a charitable small hospital facility with funding from the Ryder Cheshire Foundation.
Located 16 kilometres from Dili, it offers drug-resistant TB treatment, wheelchair access and physiotherapy for disabled people. It also has a mental health ward.
Using 4WD vehicles they care for many disabled people still living with their families out in the villages.
This centre is making a wonderful improvement to many people’s lives which would not otherwise be available or affordable, and provides employment for many local people.
A team of 12 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Bowral Mittagong spent two weeks at the hospital helping with a number of improvements.
We soon organised groups to undertake the work suggested, in very hot, dry and dusty conditions.
The kitchen fed over 100 people three times a day, but it was in poor condition.
We replaced a stove, the three exhaust fans and the hot water service, constructed a large range hood, scrubbed and re-painted the place as well as renewing the fly screens.
We also made big improvements to the serving area.
Outside, we laid concrete paths and ramps up to the washing facilities as well as refining the water reticulation system to get water to the new washing facilities and a 5000 litre water tank.
The physiotherapy ward needed another ramp plus some permanent and moveable internal walls to create more private treatment rooms.
We built these with steel frames and 5-ply on each side. Two of the ladies in our team also spent time conducting English classes whenever possible.
We visited some of their clients in the villages and that was a very moving experience. These people have to endure appalling conditions; the fact that it was the end of the dry season didn’t help.
However, we did brighten the day for some families with gifts of clothes from Australia.
