What made these forward-thinking people recognise that sending a message or document could be done more efficiently than in an envelope that was carried by ships, planes and foot over days, weeks and sometimes even months? How did these creative minds then devise such technologies as email, Facebook, Skype and more, changing the way we connect with others.
Who would have imagined pictures and documents could be stored in ‘the cloud’ rather than in bulky filing cabinets? In fact there was a time not so long ago that pictures were recorded on rolls of film and they could only be enjoyed once you had taken them to a specialist outlet to have them developed and printed. Now we can immediately see them on a screen on our digital camera – or even our phone – and we can store and easilly acces them from ‘the cloud’ - rather than a bulky photo album.
The fact that someone perceived there was a much easier way to do so many things is one thing but their ability to deliver the technology as an every day part of life is even more mind-boggling. Well at least for those who lived in a time when a telephone was a bulky item usually located in the living room and connected to an outlet in the wall. Back then the concept of this item being mobile was made possible with a longer cord.
Without a doubt technological changes have, for the most part, been life-changing for the better. But the pace at which technology is progressing would be daunting for many. It is not uncommon to hear people say I’m not on Facebook, I don’t have a computer, I never use electronic banking or I don’t have a mobile phone.
Their choice to avoid these modern conveniences may be prompted by fear or a lack of trust in the newer technologies or maybe it’s their personal protest against change. Their choice should be respected. But there is little doubt that not moving with the technological times has the potential to leave you disconnected to a wealth of advantages – most importantly the ability to stay in contact with friends and family around the world in a far more efficient and cost effective way.
