Bowral Public School’s Jack Davies is studying hard in the hopes of winning the crown for the state’s best speller.
He made it through the regional finals of the NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee recently and was rewarded with a place in the prestigious state final in Sydney in November.
Along with 89 students from across the state, the Bowral Public School student will compete for the senior title.
“I’m not sure that I can do but I just have to be confident,” Jack said.
“I’ll be up against a lot of good people so I’m working on my practice list.”
To make it to the regional finals, the junior finalists had to correctly spell words such as refugee, raucous and congregate. Meanwhile, senior students were challenged with words like cruciferous, boisterous and tzatziki.
“I had to spell ‘clandestine’ which was I word I didn’t even know but I got it right luckily,” Jack said.
The ABC will livestream parts of the competition across the day.
Jack said the thought of performing in front of such a huge audience was a bit daunting.
“I’ll probably be pretty nervous but it feels great to be up against the best people out of all the regions,” he said.
“It will be a lot of fun though, I am excited.”
While he loves spelling, Jack isn’t the biggest fan of English lessons.
“I do love to spell but I really love Maths,” he said.
“What I love most about the spelling bee is learning new words and getting better with my vocabulary.”
