But determined residents formed the ‘Save the Hall’ committee and fought for three years to save it from demolition by the Wingecarribee Shire Council.
Now, the hall has been granted heritage status from the council and is celebrating its 70th birthday.
The Friends of the Hill Top War Memorials Inc, which emerged from the Save the Hall committee after they were successful, is also celebrating 10 years of custodianship of the hall.
Committee secretary Ian Woolfe said the hall has come a long way over the years.
”It’s just funny that 10 years ago the council wanted to pull it down, and now they have given it heritage status,” he said.
”A lot of things have happened in it. We’ve even had weddings in the hall.
”It’s a real history hall. 10 years ago it could have been pulled down. It’s just an incredible story.”
This Saturday, October 21, there will be an all-day celebration at the hall in light of its 70-year history, 10 years of custodianship and the recent heritage listing.
Starting at 9am the celebration will include food, music, children’s activities, and lots of market stalls.
At 3pm there will be a ceremony where the Friends of the Hill Top War Memorials Inc will present a new plaque, recognising the hall’s heritage listing.
The Berrima Historic Society will also have a display at the celebration, featuring a look at the hall’s history.
