Year five and six girls competed at the NSW PSSA girls cricket knock-out competition and defeated Ulladulla recently.

The win was due reward for hard work, as the school has had a team in the competition for the past three years without a regional win.

Bowral Public School relieving assistant principal and girls cricket team manager Molly Ayling said the young cricketers improved each year.

“The girls’ performance was amazing. They’ve all performed as a team, which has been fantastic,” Ayling said.

“Last year Ulladulla knocked us out. This year we beat them.”

The team will compete move on to the next stage of the competition in Wagga Wagga on Wednesday, October 25.

Ayling said the win was a result of a big effort from the young cricketers as well as parents.

“They’ve grown with their cricket skills and friendships,” she said.

“If it weren’t for parent helpers, this win wouldn’t have been possible.”

Co-coach Matthew Watson said the win against Ulladulla was a big deal for the girls.

“Their secret has been a sense of fun, team spirit and a lot of effort,” Watson said.

“There’s been an emphasis on fielding and staying positive.”

Watson said he felt confident about the competition in Wagga Wagga.

“In the previous matches all teams have been competitive, but the girls’ discipline has made the difference,” he said.

“My advice to them is to just keep having fun and working hard. If you can bring those two things together, it makes the game worthwhile regardless of the result.”

Ayling said she also felt positive about the young team’s chances in Wagga Wagga.

“I’m looking forward to a win,” she said.

“It will be tough competition in Wagga Wagga.”

The team will work on its batting and fielding skills early next week in the lead-up to the competition on Wednesday.
