Protesters wearing hazmat suits pushed trolleys bearing the slogan "#Coalbank" to the bank's doorstep.

Greenpeace spokesman Jonathan Moylan said the bank promised to support a transition to net zero emissions by 2050 but its actions made a mockery of that promise.

"By failing to exclude highly polluting fossil fuel projects like coal mines, CommBank are funding projects that destroy our environment, take a catastrophic toll on the health of communities, and accelerate climate change," he said.

Since March, more than 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for the bank to rule out investment in new coal projects, Greenpeace said in a statement.

Greenpeace said that, after the protest, it took the coal back and cleaned up.

Commonwealth Bank has ruled out funding the Adani coal mine in Queensland.

In August, the bank released a one-page "Climate Policy Position Statement".

A Commonwealth Bank spokeswoman said: "Our Climate Policy Position Statement outlines our strategy and approach to implementation.

"This approach will be updated as our understanding of climate risk and opportunities evolve.

"Importantly, we are undertaking a climate scenario analysis to inform and guide our longer term strategy and approach to managing climate change. This work will be completed by the end of 2018."

"Since 2012, we have reduced our total exposure to direct coal mining by 79 per cent and coal fired electricity generation by 19 per cent.

"At June 30, 2017, we have a total committed exposure to direct coal mining ($0.3 billion), coal terminals ($1.4 billion) and coal fired electricity generation ($0.4 billion).

"Our lending to renewable energy projects was $2.8 billion at June 30, 2017. This is a 170 per cent increase since 2012 and more than seven times the group's exposure to direct coal-related electricity generation."
