But large park rockets were a big hit while they were around
The revamp of a Mittagong Park (including a rocket) and its surrounding precinct is on the to do list for one Wingecarribee councillor.
Cr Ian Scandrett wants to see the return of a park rocket at Winifred West Park along with the installation of an Outdoor Fitness Centre.
A motion to bring back the rocket was approved in the last term in 2015 but remains in the unfunded projects list.
Cr Scandrett said a community survey two years ago showed there was support in the community for it being brought back.
It was removed from the park in the 1970s.
One of the key issues of installing another rocket is safety.
Cr Scandrett said the cost of installing a rocket that would meet modern safety standards would be about $90,000.
He believes a one off payment to council expected as part of the Mittagong Central development could be used to fund the rocket.
An outdoor fitness centre at Bowral Pool has been well received.
One is scheduled to be built at Lake Alexandra this financial year but Cr Scandrett said he believed the Winifred West would also be a great location for one.
“The general criteria is central locations to encourage walking to/from [destinations]. Winifred West also fits this very well.”
He has also suggested the inclusion of drinking fountains with integrated dog bowls.
There is also a 120,000 litre water tank in the precinct which was part of the original Mittagong Central development. It has not been in use due to the delays in the development.
Cr Scandrett said if it was not used as part of the new development, he believed it had the potential to be used in the precinct for the park and surrounding services’ water needs.
“I’m just appalled we would even consider knocking in a brand new water tank.”
