The fire started north of Marulan just before 12.25pm on Saturday, and spread to Wingello and Penrose.
The Paddys River bushfire closed a section of the Hume Highway in the Southern Highlands.
The road was closed between the BP Service Station, Marulan and Sallys Corner Road while nine fire trucks and a large air tanker battled the blaze.
The fire started as a ‘watch and act’ but was upgraded to emergency level by late afternoon.
By Sunday afternoon the fire was declared ‘contained’.
Average temperatures across the country came in at 33.5 degrees on Saturday, the hottest on record for September.
RFS spokesman James Morris warned families planning to go camping during the school holidays to be aware of their surroundings and respect fire bans.
"If you're going into a fairly dense section of bush with no mobile coverage, you obviously won't be able to access fire warnings," Mr Morris said.
"Be aware of your surroundings and if you're not comfortable, change your plans to somewhere a bit safer."
Firefighters have reminded Wingecarribee residents bush fire danger period (BFDP) will officially commence on October 1.
Anyone wishing to light a fire during this period must obtain a permit from their local fire control centre.
Firefighters also urged homeowners to prepare for the upcoming fire season, noting warmer than average temperatures and below average rainfall are forecast for the coming months.
Agencies and firefighters have been busy undertaking hazard reductions in the lead up to the bush fire season and it is equally as important that residents play their part by preparing their property.
Now is the time to make or update your Bush Fire Survival Plan and have a conversation with your family to ensure everyone knows what they will do and where they will go in the event that they are threatened by a bush fire.
