The first round of matches for the Mittagong RSL annual RSL shield was played on August 26. Ken Handley, Carl Spilker, Ashley Lewis and Greg Lewis defeated Eric Willacy, Elaine Jones, Don Chapman and Michael Flynn 29-12 to take first place. After 15 ends team, Lewis had a commanding lead 25-6. Team Flynn had no answers to their play. A last-gasp effort by team Flynn, that scored six shots, stopped team Lewis from inflicting a heavy defeat. The match of the round Bruce Clynes, Gordon Lewis, Greg Taylor and Paul Leverett defeated Richard Denman, John Cummins, Barry Werfel and Noel Acton 25-23. But got away to a big start and had a lead 17-7 after 12 ends. Team Leverett came back into the match and with one end to play the scores 23-23. Team Acton held shot on the last end but Leverett was able to take the shot bowl out to pick up two shots for a lucky win.
