Council’s operations, finance and risk deputy general manager Barry Paull said it was with great regret that the call was made.
“After discussions with our recently appointed contractor, we’ve decided that it would be unfair to continue to raise the expectations of our patrons,” he said.
Extensive damage was caused as a result of last year’s east coast low storm event where floodwaters penetrated beneath the base of the pools.
Of most concern was the severe structural damage sustained to the entire floor of the learn to swim Ppool.
Repairs will involve removing and replacing the floors of both the 50 metre pool and learn to swim pool.
Other actions required will include repairs to the tiling, guttering modifications and the replacement of the entry ladders. A new barrier will also be constructed between the water toys and learn to swim pool.
Further repairs may be necessary once excavations have commenced.
“Until we dig under the base of the pools and into the adjoining walls will we not know the true extent of the damage,” Mr Paull said.
Early records indicated the site was first used for recreational swimming as early as the mid-1870’s. The pool underwent several refurbishments before being officially opened in 1931.
In 1959 the baths were increased to 50 metres in size.
“Another major challenge is that the pool was essentially built on the bed of the Nattai River by our forefathers 86 years ago,” Mr Paull added.
Repair works are scheduled to begin in August by specialist contractor Icon Building Group.
As a result of the temporary closure the opening times of Bowral Swimming Pool will be extended for the upcoming summer swim season.
“While the pool will regretfully remain closed this summer, we already look forward to the following swim season and the return of the site to its former glory.”
