Bong Bong Picnic Race Club lifetime member Alan Chittick, is compiling a history of the annual country picnic races that began in 1886.
He wants community members with stories or photos from the early days of the races (anywhere from the 1880s to the 1950s) to help him piece together a history of the much-adored event.
During the 1980s Bong Bong was one of the largest picnic race meetings in the world. Raucous behaviour from punters meant the races were closed for several years until being revived in 1992 under strict conditions.
Mr Chittick plans to release a readable history of the races, ‘Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow’ at this year’s big event, set to be held on November 24. Details: Alan Chittick on 4868 3533.
